Singing River Health System’s Neuroscience Center, located in Ocean Springs, continues to offer a variety of free support groups to the community.
Parkinson’s Disease Support Group
Meets the second Thursday of every month from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. This group is led by a variety of healthcare professionals for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and their family members. A variety of healthcare providers lead the group to provide information and better understanding of problems associated with the disease and resources for how to improve daily life. Members will be encouraged to share their experiences and questions with other members and healthcare providers.
Aphasia and Communication Support Group
Meets the third Thursday of every month from 4:00pm to 5:00pm. This group is for people who have been diagnosed with aphasia, dysfluency (stuttering) or exhibit difficulties with processing skills required for communication. People who wish to attend are encouraged to bring any additional communication device they may use (communication board, speech generating device, etc.). The group is led by a speech language pathologist who treats adults with acquired communication impairments following a neurological disorder or diagnosis.
Movement Disorder Exercise Group
Meets the fourth Tuesday of every month from 4pm to 5pm. This group is designed to provide a full body workout for people of all levels of physical ability. Classes will focus on stretching, strengthening, cardiovascular and coordination exercises of both the upper and lower body in a group setting. This is a fun and interactive class aimed at improving overall fitness and health.
Stroke Support Group
Meets the second Thursday of every month from 11:30am to 12:30pm. This group is open to individuals who have suffered from a stroke, both recently or in the past, as well as their family members. It is designed for people to share their experiences with one another, with an emphasis on open discussion. This group will address multiple areas affected by stroke, from mobility and self-care to speech and cognition. The group will be led by a member of our team of therapists skilled in the treatment of stroke impairments. Active participation is encouraged as we aim for participants to share their journeys and learn new information in order to improve their function and quality of life.
All classes meet in the second floor Conference Room at the Neuroscience Center in Ocean Springs, located at 3603 Bienville Blvd., Suite 202.
