Biography
Dr. William T. “Pete” Avara, III, has been a practicing general surgeon since 1987 and has performed over 4,000 bariatric procedures. He is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Medicine, and he completed his residency in General Surgery at the University Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida.
Dr. Avara has received specialized training in the surgical treatment of obesity that includes completing a mini-fellowship in Laparoscopic Bariatric Surgery. He is credentialed to perform Bariatric Surgery with the Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass and the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (Gastric Sleeve) Procedures.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Eastern Association for Surgery of Trauma. He is a Fellow of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). He is past-President of the Mississippi Coastal Trauma Region, Past-Director of Trauma Services at Singing River Hospital, and Past-Chairman of the Mississippi Department of the Health Trauma Advisory Board.
