Dr. Philip Myers of Singing River Orthopedics is the first surgeon in the state of Mississippi to use augmented reality (AR) technology during a hip replacement procedure. Dr. Myers has successfully performed three total hip replacements utilizing HipInsight technology.

About HipInsight

The HipInsight system is the world’s first mixed reality-based digital surgery platform for total hip arthroplasty. The system effectively gives the surgeon “x-ray vision” to see anatomy, instruments, and implants inside the patient’s body in real time.

How HipInsight Works

HipInsight can be used with any partial or total hip replacement surgery.

Before the procedure, a CT scan of the patient’s pelvis is done according to plan for augmented reality. With this scan, the surgeon maps the exact placement of the hip replacement components.

During surgery, a sensor is placed on the bony pelvis.

The surgeon wears a headset to view a holographic, three-dimensional image of the patient’s anatomy, based on the preoperative CT scan, superimposed on the patient.

The surgeon then follows the trajectory of the images to place the components accurately.

Benefits of Augmented Reality

There are several noteworthy advantages of augmented reality in orthopedic surgery. HipInsight enhances the accuracy of hip replacements by providing immediate feedback and visualizing the optimal angle for component placement. The accuracy of AR technology may also decrease the need for x-rays during surgery, reducing the amount of radiation exposure for both patients and the surgical team.

Orthopedic Surgeon

“HipInsight is a groundbreaking technology that significantly enhances precision and visualization during surgery. I’m excited to bring this innovative tool to the state of Mississippi to advance orthopedic surgical care.”

Dr. Myers is currently using HipInsight for hip replacement patients on a case-by-case basis, particularly those with abnormal bony anatomy or those who have had previous hip replacements.
