Singing River Health System First in the State to Perform PASCAL Procedure
Singing River Health System is the first healthcare provider in Mississippi to successfully perform a PASCAL implant procedure, an innovative treatment for patients suffering from mitral regurgitation.
The procedure was performed at Ocean Springs Hospital by Dr. Michael Cunningham, the Medical Director for Cardiac Services, and Dr. Jason Williams, a cardiothoracic surgeon. The PASCAL device, developed by Edwards Lifesciences, is designed to reduce the leakage of the mitral valve by providing a minimally invasive treatment option for patients with severe mitral regurgitation, who may not be candidates for open-heart surgery.

Interventional Cardiologist and Medical Director for Cardiac Services“We are thrilled to be the first in the state to offer this innovative procedure. The PASCAL implant procedure represents a significant advancement in treatment of mitral valve disease, providing hope for patients who previously had limited options.”
Mitral regurgitation is a condition in which the heart’s mitral valve does not close tightly, allowing blood to flow backward in the heart. This can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and irregular heartbeats. The PASCAL system allows for the precise placement of a flexible implant to effectively reduce mitral regurgitation and improve patient outcomes.
The structural heart team at Singing River continues to lead the way in offering advanced cardiovascular treatments. This milestone is part of Singing River’s ongoing commitment to providing the highest quality of care and the latest medical treatment options to its patients.
