What is a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)?
Certified Nursing Assistants (CNAs), also known as Patient Care Assistants (PCAs) or Nurse’s Aids, provide basic patient care and support in partnership with nurses, physicians and other caregivers. CNAs assist patients with activities of daily living and the ideal CNA has a passion for people and direct patient care.

As a CNA Apprentice, you’ll gain experience on-the-job to help you determine your best next steps, whether it is pursuing licensure as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Registered Nurse (RN) or even growing into a four year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.

About the Course
Apprentices first take a CNA course that lasts eight weeks and includes a hands-on clinical rotation. They are then transitioned into their job placement. The course will provide a baseline of knowledge in the:
- Operation of basic medical equipment.
- Performance of basic medical tasks under the directive or supervision of licensed medical personnel.
- Performance of basic tasks in aid of patients requiring assistance with ADLs in a healthcare or home setting.
- Basic knowledge about the human body, its systems, and how to care for patients with certain diagnoses related to body systems.
Prerequisites
There are no prerequisites for the CNA apprenticeship program.
Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students are able to do the following:
- Describe the role of the Certified Nursing Assistant.
- Demonstrate competency in communicating appropriately in the medical setting.
- Describe legal and ethical issues encountered in the medical setting.
- Demonstrate proficiency in providing patients assistance with ADLs.
- Demonstrate Proficiency in collecting patient date i.e. Vital signs and patient intake and output
- Describe the components of HIPAA confidentiality regulations.
- Explain basic principles of infection control.
- Describe strategies to communicate appropriately with patients from different cultures and across all stages of life.
- Student will be eligible to sit for the state-approved CNA exam
