Breast MRI
Breast MRI is the most sensitive tool that we have for detecting breast cancer, particularly in patients who are at high-risk. Used in coordination with 3D Mammography, our Radiologists are able to see more tumors at their early stages.
There’s no radiation involved with the MRI, so that’s ideal for a younger patient.
High Risk Patients
Insurance will cover the cost of a Breast MRI, but in order to qualify, you should have a high risk of developing breast cancer. To know whether or not you are at high risk (20% or more chance) of developing breast cancer, ask your primary care doctor about a High Risk Breast Assessment. Some risk factors include:
- Age
- Dense Breasts
- You have the hereditary gene mutation BRCA1 or BRCA2
- Number of first-degree relatives with breast cancer
- History of cancer and subsequent radiation treatment
What to Expect from a Breast MRI
During a Breast MRI, patients lay face-down onto a padded table. Your breasts fit inside a hollow space in the table, which contains the MRI “coil.” The table slides into the MRI machine.
After you are positioned, the machine creates a magnetic field around you and radio waves are directed at your body. You won’t feel the radio waves or magnetic field, but the machine does make a loud thumping sound. We have headphones available for your comfort.
The test takes between 15-18 minutes. Your images will be reviewed and analyzed for results available within 24 hours of your MRI.
