Anterior Hip Replacement
If you’re suffering from hip pain and considering surgery, you may have heard about Anterior Hip Replacement. At Singing River Orthopedics, the only provider of anterior hip replacements on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, we’re here to help you understand what it involves and why it might be right for you.
During hip replacement surgery, the orthopedic surgeon removes the damaged part of a hip joint and replaces them with new parts. For those living with hip pain, this can be a life-changing surgery that restores your ability to move freely and reduces your pain.
Approaches to Hip Replacement
There are three main approaches to a hip replacement surgery:
- Lateral incision (from the side)
- Posterior incision (from the back)
- Anterior incision (from the front)
In the Lateral and Posterior approach, the surgeon can only access your hip joint by cutting through muscles and other tissues that stabilize your hip joint. So, not only does the surgeon have to replace your joint, they have to repair these muscles as well.
While both of these approaches can produce excellent results, there are added benefits to having an anterior hip replacement. In the Anterior approach, the patient lies on their back in a special type of orthopedic table, and the surgeon makes an incision from the front. Using this approach, the surgeon can work between muscles, navigating around nerves and blood vessels, rather than cutting through or detaching them.

Why may a patient choose to have an anterior hip replacement?
1. Improved Component Positioning
The anterior method can provide better visibility for the surgeon, potentially improving the outcome of the procedure. Precise positioning of hip replacement implants is crucial for optimal joint function and longevity, reducing the risk of complications and the need for revision surgeries.
2. Faster Recovery
Many patients prefer the anterior approach because it often leads to a quicker recovery time and less postoperative pain. Since the muscles and tendons are less affected, you might experience a faster return to normal activities.
3. Less Pain & Better Outcomes
For those struggling with severe hip pain, an anterior hip replacement can significantly improve quality of life. By avoiding cutting through the muscles and soft tissues that naturally prevent hip dislocation, you’ll have a more stable and secure joint. Patients also commonly report lower pain levels and better engagement in daily activities like walking, climbing stairs, and playing with grandchildren.
Operating Room Advancements
The Hana Table
Singing River Orthopedics uses the gold standard Hana® Orthopedic Surgery Table for its anterior hip replacements.
- Imaging: While most surgical tables are made out of stainless steel, the Hana table incorporates carbon fiber in order for surgeons to take unobstructed images of their work during the procedure to check on placements, positioning, and alignment.
- Body Positioning: This table allows the surgeon to independently position and articulate the patient’s legs in order to access the hip joint through a smaller incision and avoid cutting muscle.
- Comfort: You won’t be awake, but you’ll be cozy. The Hana is outfitted with Tempur-Pedic pads that contour and support you.
HipInsight
Singing River Orthopedics is the first practice in Mississippi to utilize augmented reality to enhance precision and visualization during hip replacement surgery.
HipInsight is the world’s first mixed reality-based digital surgery platform for total hip arthroplasty. The system effectively gives the surgeon “x-ray vision” to see anatomy, instruments, and implants inside the patient’s body in real time.
