Veteran Hospice Care

Singing River Health System’s Hospice of Light is a Level 3 We Honor Veterans Partner. Our hospice recognizes the unique needs of Mississippi Veterans and their families and has built a strong relationship with VA medical centers and other Veteran organizations.

Serving the Special Needs of Veterans During End-of-Life Care

Level 3 We Honor Veterans Partner

In order to better care for veterans in hospice care, Hospice of Light participates in extra training about caring for veterans, including training from the local VA.

One of Hospice of Light’s primary goals is to build organizational capacity to provide quality care for veterans.

We also operate a Veteran-to-Veteran volunteer program.

Special Veteran Needs

The first step to providing quality end-of-life care to our nation’s Veterans is to learn more about their unique needs by becoming familiar with military culture. Veterans may face illness, isolation, or traumatic life experiences that are contributing to their health complications.

Our caregivers integrate a “Military History Checklist” into the admissions process and are able to connect veteran patients with additional resources. By knowing more about a veteran’s military history, we know more about what specific traumas and health risks they were exposed to.

Specific Veteran populations who are also vulnerable and may benefit from specialized care:

  • Homeless
  • Rural Areas
  • American Indians / Alaska Natives
  • Substance Use Disorder
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Sexual Trauma

About “We Honor Veterans”

We Honor Veterans exists to “empower hospice professionals to meet the unique needs of dying Veterans and their loved ones.”

The program was started for hospices and other organizations to be able to provide better care to veterans through an assessment and implementation process.

Veteran-centric education for staff and volunteers is implemented to help these organizations learn how to care for veterans and find more resources for them.
