Social Worker Services

Social Workers are available to patients at Singing River Cancer Center throughout all phases of their cancer journey and offer a variety of service including:

  • Finding transportation to appointments
  • Communicating with the doctor
  • Obtaining emotional support
  • Helping patients and caregivers adjust to illness
  • Addressing concerns about quality of life
  • Helping with changes or disruptions in work

Several programs are offered to support patients through these difficult challenges including:

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is available to cancer patients and their families who prefer to speak to someone on a one-on-one basis. Our social workers and Cancer Center team are here to help work through all aspects of a cancer diagnosis and help patients to cope with diagnosis-related stress and anxiety.

Workshops for Well-Being

During the course of cancer treatments, we realize it is important to focus on the person as a whole and understand there is a connection between mind, body, and spirit. We offer free workshops focusing on wellbeing that teach patients simple stress-reduction and relaxation techniques.

Workshops are held quarterly.

Medication / Financial Assistance

Cancer medications and treatments can be quite expensive, sometimes even with insurance. However, there are many financial assistance programs that our social workers are familiar with and can link patients with in order to help relieve some of those out-of-pocket expenses. Our social workers provide assistance with the necessary paperwork, can speak directly to drug manufacturers, and help find foundations, grants, and other funding sources that may relieve some of the financial burden related to cancer treatment.

Brave and Beautiful

Brave and Beautiful is a free make-over program offered at Singing River Cancer Center that helps women with appearance side effects of cancer treatment, including beauty tips with cosmetics, resources for wigs and hair loss related challenges, and more.

Image Consulting

Losing your hair can be one of the hardest parts of undergoing cancer treatments, and our social workers at the Singing River Cancer Center provide women with a complimentary consultation in our private wig boutique, teaching patients how to use wigs and scarves to enhance their appearance. Patients can receive a complimentary wig and scarf during the consultation as well.
